Το διάσημο, έγκυρο και εναλλακτικό μουσικό περιοδικό NME, διοργάνωσε μια πολύ μεγάλη ψηφοφορία για την ανάδειξη των 500 καλύτερων albums όλων των εποχών από τους συντάκτες του.
Ζήτησε από τον κάθε ένα από αυτούς να συντάξουν μια λίστα με τα 50 καλύτερα κατά την άποψη τους. Το πρώτο κάθε λίστας ανταμειβόταν με 50 πόντους, το δέυτερο με 49 και παέι λέγοντας, για να μπορέσσει στη συνέχεια να δημιουργθεί η λίστα με τα 500 καλύτερα. Την πρωτιά από όλη αυτή τη διαδικασία κέρδισε το 'The Queen Is Dead' των Smiths.
