Tα βραβεία του περιοδικού NME πάντα προκαλούν έντονες συζητήσεις και πολλές φορές ακόμα και αντιδράσεις, για τις επιλογές των καλλιτεχνών στις υποψηφιότητες αλλά και τις αρκετά πρωτότυπες και πολλές φορές ειρωνικές κατηγορίες υποψηφιότητων που ανακοινώνονται κάθε χρόνια.
